Furnace Fuel Oil

Renewable Furnace Fuel Oil

Sometimes known as commercial or industrial heating oil, our renewable furnace fuel oil is the perfect option for replacing gas oil with a clean-burning, cheaper, and ecologically sound renewable heating fuel.

RenHeat can be quickly used in commercial heating boilers, furnaces, foundries, or for drying cereals without needing to invest in new boilers or even speaking with a boiler engineer. It has similar calorific values to IHO but is synthetically produced from waste feedstocks.

Furnace Fuel

This boiler fuel is an advanced eco-friendly drop-in alternative to red gas oil that gives an excellent calorific value and dramatically reduces net carbon emissions by between 84 and 94%.

RenHeat is compliant to the BS EN 2869 standard Class D parameters but please note it is illegal to use it in vehicles like forklifts, vans, trucks, or cars.

Cheaper than HVO, this renewable furnace fuel oil price is finding more and more interest as a premium UK made product that is produced from 100% ISCC certified waste feedstocks.

For reasons of its good cost per litre, eco credentials, and better interaction with burners yielding greatly reduced soot levels, this synthetic fuel is well worth checking out!

Renewable Heating Oil

Renewable Heating Oil

What is renewable heating oil? There are a couple of options of fossil free renewable fuel oil available that are made from wastes and residues, but in general, this refers to RenHeat synthetic kerosene or to HVO heating oil (hydrotreated vegetable oil). The latter is a road fuel and will be more expensive in heating applications.

Also known as green diesel, or renewable diesel, HVO diesel fuel and RenHeat fuel are renewable fuel oils with differences that are both remarkable and distinctive and thus worth looking into a bit deeper.

Renewable Heating Oil

At present, it is also often more expensive than fossil kerosene heating oil, albeit much cleaner burning and with a net 90% cut in net carbon emissions and substantially less soot and carbon deposits on burners.

It would be ideal if a stream of renewable heating oil on a lower or rebated tax rate became available. With Government plans to phase out fossil kerosene C2 boilers from new rural dwellings from 2025, it is likely that this will come about, in Northern Ireland there are a particularly high proportion of homes with oil-fired boilers so this will have to be considered.

Renewable Heating Oil Suppliers

Hydrotreated vegetable oil is made from used cooking oils, fish waste, and animal fats from the food processing industry, this is a synthetic man-made fuel from the ground up, thus offering the opportunity to craft a highly stable, long-life, ultra consistent, and very clean burning fuel.

It can truly be said that the cost of renewable heating oil needs to be looked at over a longer term than just the per-litre price. It is far better for reliability of both boilers and compression-ignition engines of all types because the soot levels are so low, in trials in Cornwall over 12 months, the boiler engineers had never seen so little soot on an oil-fired boiler!

The feedstocks that go into HVO renewable heating oil

As an added bonus to the fantastic cold flow characteristics and high cetane number, HVO also notably reduces NOx emissions, is virtually sulphur free, and contains no fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) that is often responsible for blocking filters and growing algae in the tanks.

As at Spring 2023 the cost of bulk deliveries of around 500+ litres of this renewable fuel oil is around £1.80 + VAT per litre. Look after your expensive boilers and massively reduce emissions and air pollution by switching to a renewable fuel!

We also offer RenHeat furnace fuel which is another fossil-free bio heating oil aimed more at sites like factories, schools, and hospitals for larger-scale heating purposes.

Ideal for where clients wish to reduce carbon emissions and look after furnaces, if you can take an articulated tanker load of 38,000 litres of RenHeat fuel the price per litre can be around £1.65 + VAT at present.

What Is HVO Diesel?

What Is HVO Diesel?

We have set out to provide some answers to to common questions of what HVO is this in this blog. The letters ‘HVO’ mean hydrotreated vegetable oil, a renewable diesel fuel made from waste products.

HVO diesel is a paraffinic fuel that has physical properties more like kerosene than mineral diesel. With good cold flow characteristics and storage stability, this high-purity synthetic fuel also burns cleanly contains almost no sulphur and consequently has notably less odour than DERV. The logo on HVO fuel pumps is XTL.

What Is HVO Diesel

Trials of HVO diesel by the Port Of London Authority, among others, have shown very little encrusted soot on exhaust valves and tests by MTU Friedrichshafen indicate a particulate matter reduction of 80% without damage to power output. HVO is also known as green or renewable diesel which complies with the EN 15940 specification.

Download a summary of the Port Of London authority’s report.

Due to HVO’s eco-friendly credentials and clean burn performance, it is useful to understand hydrotreated vegetable oil in a bit more depth; it is also often called renewable diesel.

What is HVO diesel?

Hydrotreating is a process whereby long chain molecules are cracked and a synthetic, stable, and consistent renewable diesel fuel is made from used cooking oils, waste animal fats, and fish waste.

Due to the recycling of waste products, the net greenhouse gas emissions when HVO is used in vehicles or for home heating boilers, are reduced by upto 90%, aiding your journey to net zero with zero vehicle modifcations!

Goodbye To Blocked Fuel Filters

Being a man-made and very pure fuel with a high cetane number, and being exceptionally clean burning means it is better for diesel engines in cars, vans, boats, tractors, and trucks and emits much less soot and NOx.

This biofuel offers substantially better long-term storage characteristics than FAME bio-diesel and will not grow algae in the storage tank or block fuel filters.

Any diesel engine can easily run on HVO diesel without modifications, and it can be mixed with standard diesel with no problems so it is simple, green, and clean.

Decarbonising The Easy Way

Would you like to calculate the carbon emissions you will save with using HVO? Head over to the GOV.UK website to use their handy calculator (you will save around 2.2kgs of CO2 emissions per litre you burn).

Please see  a simple chart for the carbon reductions below:

What Is HVO Diesel

How about in cold weather?

HVO performs excellently in cold weather and is used heavily in Scandinavia where there is more than one producer like Neste and UPM. Users can operate down to minus 25 degrees Celsius without flow issues or clouding.

A new domestic heating oil?

Because of its clean burn and circular economy features, it is likely that HVO will be used as a home and business heating fuel to replace mineral kerosene. In trials in the UK it has shown very little soot build up in more than 12 months of use in domestic oil boilers.

What is HVO diesel

New installations of kerosene boilers will stop in 2030 so if you are wondering what is HVO diesel and can I use it instead of kerosene?

The answer is yes, absolutely you can. Some minor tweaks and alterations are likely to be needed with existing boilers. Please get in touch by sending an email to oil@lubiq.uk to discuss your needs.

Below is a video tour of the Neste Porvoo biorefinery where HVO is produced; it is now produced in the UK by Phillips 66 in Humberside.

Alternative To Kerosene Heating Oil

Alternative To Kerosene Heating Oil With 85% Less Emissions

With the news of kerosene oil fired boilers being banned in new builds from 2030 it is important to consider an alternative to kerosene heating oil that reduces green house gas emissions and offers a cleaner burn for reduced boiler servicing?

Alternative To Kerosene Heating Oil

The fantastic news is that there is a great kerosene alternative heating oil fuel available! It is called HVO or hydrotreated vegetable oil to give it the full title. We also now supply RenHeat bio heating oil for larger factory applications

This remarkable fuel is synthetic or man-made and is made from 100% waste feedstocks, with a net emissions cut of as high as 90% it is often known as renewable diesel (not the same as FAME biodiesel) and used in a host of vehicles both on and off-road.

Alternative To Kerosene Heating Oil

In terms of its characteristics however, HVO is more like kerosene than red or white diesel, and while cars, boats, trucks, tractors, and generators need no modifications to run on HVO, domestic heating boilers may need to be adjusted before changing.

Boiler maker Grant Engineering and others explain in this video how little is actually needed in tweaking your boiler and fuelling apparatus; it is estimated to cost around £500 and then you can get going with a fossil-free alternative to kerosene heating oil!

Disruption and cost to change your heating oil is minimal and delivery can be arranged easily.

Manufactured from used cooking oils, fish waste, and animal fats, HVO is better for boilers and internal combustion engines due to the consistently clean burn and great storage stability. You can store HVO home heating oil for up to 10 years and it has superb cold flow and starting properties.

At present hydrotreated vegetable oil is taxed in the same way as white diesel is for road vehicles. This, and other factors, do mean that it is more expensive than traditional kerosene but with its multiple benefits and more US and European production coming online it is certainly a fuel of the future!

How Is HVO Made?

Surprising numbers of heavy trucks and construction machinery are already using HVO every day and we can arrange bulk delivery of it as your house heating oil, we also provide HVO fuel in small quantities in 10 and 20 litre UN approved jerrycans or IBC’s.
